Artist Biography

Jason E. Carter is a native of  Birmingham Michigan, a suburb of  Detroit.  Jason’s parents moved north  from Biloxi, Mississippi to Michigan,  and like many others in the area his  Father found work in the automotive  industry.  While summers for average  kids in Birmingham were to go to the  lakes, Jason spent the summers with  family in Mississippi and on the Gulf  Coast.

Painting was always a major interest and it eventually lead Jason to choose Art as a career.  Jason’s skills were honed at a specialized art school, College for Creative Studies (CCS), in downtown Detroit.   During the years at CCS, Jason apprenticed with Professor and Painter Joseph Bernard, and worked at a local contemporary art gallery, Revolution.  Jason graduated with a B.F.A. in 1999, focusing in painting and printmaking.

Since CCS, Jason pursued employment doing Art Conservation with a private conservator at Conservation and Museum Services (CMS).  At CMS, Jason cleans and restores paintings and frames from Private, Corporate, and Museum collections.  In addition to the art restoration, he has taken the position of Assistant Preparator at Cranbrook Art Museum.

Jason has continually done Commercial work as well as Gallery shows.  Shows include:

•    27th Michigan Annual Ann Arbor Print Show where Jason was
      awarded the Janet Gallup Award
•    Chicago, Illinois at Gallery 1633
•    Last December was a part of a group show at Synergy in
     Berkley, Michigan

Jason’s work can be found in private and corporate collections, one of whom is the advertising agency, Donor.  Jason was the sole artist for a major art installation at Centaur Bar, an upscale martini bar.  There he created three large murals and nine paintings, and logo design.  He also advised on interior aesthetics of the bar.  Centaur was recognized by Conde Nast Traveler Hot List 2006, and was also the location for the ESPN parties during Superbowl XL.

For the Urban Mix Lounge, based out of Atlanta, GA, Jason designed the logo for the radio show which was used on all promotional items.

Currently Jason is working on album art work for Underground Detroit Hip Hop Artist DL Jones.  Jason is interested in being involved in all aspects of art and design and is co-curating a show at Synergy Gallery of Italian Artist, Bruno Canova.  This will be Canova’s first break into the United States.

When not involved with art projects, Jason is also a collector of art and objects, and supporter of the Detroit music scene.
